Understanding Paint Chips . . . volume 1 of 1,000,000

Picking the right paint color is so difficult!  What is even more confusing is that they way paint chips are organized.  Going "up" or "down" one color doesn't mean you're going to get a lighter or darker shade of the same color.  In fact, many colors on a card look totally different!  That is because they are!  Sigh.

Here's a solution (and this is particularly important with medium colors that can read very bright on the wall).

1. If you like a color but are worried it will look like you belong in a circus, ask the paint store to give you 25% of the color.

2. Bring with you to the store a brush and a piece of foam board to try the color - test it right there in the store.

3. Not enough pigment?  They can add more.  Ask for 50% color.

4.  Test again with 75% of the color.

5.  You will now have 4 different color options of the same hue  . . . and the best thing is testing at the store allows you to play around with this mixture with only one sample pint of paint!  (And at almost $8, that saves you a lot)!

6.  Take your sample board home and hang it on the wall to compare.  I've found again that with mid range hues in the middle of the card, this trick works well and allows you to get the same effect without anything looking to bright.
